CHAPTER 2 | IRRIGATION |
---|
Answer the following questions in brief:
(1) What is irrigation? What are the main objectives of irrigation?
Ans.
i) Irrigation is supplying water to crops.
ii) Objectives include enhancing crop growth, stabilizing yields, mitigating drought
impact and ensuring consistent agriculture production despite variable rainfall.
(2) What are the main types of irrigation?
Ans.
Main types of irrigation include surface irrigation (furrow, basin), drip irrigation,
sprinkler irrigation and sub-surface irrigation, each with specific advantages and
applications in agriculture.
Drip irrigation is mainly used for which crops in Maharashtra? Why?
Ans.
Drip irrigation is widely used for cash crops like grapes and sugarcane in
Maharashtra due to water efficiency, decision and improved yield.
(4) What are the components of trip irrigation set? What are the benefits of
the method of drip irrigation?
Ans.
Drip irrigation includes tubing, emitters, filters and valves.
Benefits: water efficiency, reduced soil erosion, precise nutrient delivery, lower
weed growth, and energy savings, enhancing crop yield and resources
conservation.
(5) Compare drip irrigation method and sprinkler irrigation method.
Ans.
i)Drip irrigation delivers water directly to plant roots, minimising waste and
evaporation.
ii)Sprinkler irrigations praise water over crops, suitable for a variety of crops but
can result in higher evaporation.
iii)Drip is more water efficient while sprinklers cover larger areas.
(6) What kind of material is used for sprinkler irrigation?
Ans.
Materials for sprinkler irrigation include pipes (PVC, aluminium), rises and
sprinkler heads for effective water distribution in agriculture.
