CHAPTER 3
WATERSHED AREA AND WATER TYPE

EXERCISE

QUESTION FOR WRITTEN WORK

Answer the following question in brief:

(1) Write the classification of watershed areas/ catchment areas.

Ans.

Name of the watershed Area of the watershed
i) Micro watershed Up to 10 hectares
ii) Mini watershed Up to 200 hectares
iii) Sub watershed Up to 4000 hectares
iv) River valley No area limit

(2) write any four properties of the water said areas forward / catchment areas.

Ans.

i) Size : The proportion of watershed coming from the catchment areas is related to the length and width of the catchment area.

ii) Soil Depth: Soil Depth is also a factor affecting the soil erosion watershed.

iii) Soil : The water holding capacity , amount of soil erosion, etc. depends on type of soil.

iv) Flow density: The study of flow density in the catchment area is very important.

(3) Write the names of various sources of groundwater.

Ans.

Some of the sources of groundwater is as follows:

i) Rainfall
ii) connate water
iii) Magma/volcanic water

(4) Write down how Magma water is formed.

Ans.
When water vapour in molten rocks is formed due to underground Magma, it rise through the available notches. If it does not find a place to rise it eventually condenses and transforms into water. This water is called Magma or volcanic water.

(5) Write the characteristics of unsaturated (unconfined) aquifer .

Ans.

i) It controls the flow of water from the surface to the confined aquifer

ii) It proves crucial in groundwater use and management.

iii) It helps in removing unwanted substances.

(6) Explain what is surface water and its types.

Ans
Surface water is water found on the surface. This includes rivers , lakes , springs , reservoirs , ponds , creeks , etc. Although sea water is salty brackish , it is still considered as surface water.
It's types :
A) Perennial surface water
B) Temporary surface water
C) Man made surface water.

(7) Write the classification of groundwater according to geographical location.

Ans.
The type of groundwater on the basis of geographical classification are as follows:
i) Aquifer ,
ii) Aquitard ,
iii) Aquiclude ,
iv) Aquifuge ,
v) Hanging Aquifer
