Answer the following questions in brief:

(1) What is a well?

Ans.

i) The construction of a pit from the ground is called a well.

ii) The well is one of the most popular structures designed to reach groundwater level and make it available for use.


(2) What is borewell?

Ans.

i) Borewell is a modern gadget used to ful-fill the need of groundwater.

ii) It is very useful and beneficial as it occupies less space. It is comparatively less costlier.


(3) Write in brief about the ring well.

Ans.

i) The ring well is basically circular in shape.

ii) It is made up of 10 feet to 20 feet deep.

iii) It is suitable in a region near the beach and areas where the groundwater level is good.


(4)What is pond/pool?

Ans.

i) A pond is a natural or artificial reservoir in a shallow part of the land.

ii) It is given a defined shape by the construction.


(5)Explain the significance of ponds/tools with the help of their uses known to you.

Ans.

i) Since ancient times ponds have been used for supplying water to people. Like rivers, ponds have also gained religious significance in India.

ii) Ponds, especially Pushkaranis are found in premises of most of the temples in India.

iii) In ancient times, building a pond density for public use was considered a sacred act according to Dharmashastra.


(6) Write in brief about farm ponds/puddles.

Ans.

i) Ponds dug for availability of water to the crops in the areas of scarcity of water are called farm ponds.

ii) Farm ponds are constructed on the upper side of the farm to store rain water / runoff water where it is not possible to dig wells easily.


(7)Write in brief about Bodi.

Ans.

i) The small lakes constructed in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra to feed water to the paddy fields are called Bodi.

ii) In the districts of Vidarbha, small reservoirs are constructed and water is stored in the upper part of the paddy fields by earthen check dams.

iii) The stored water is fed to the paddy in the lower part of the reservoir as per the requirements.
