Unit 3 : Water Management
CHAPTER 1
WATER IS THE BASIS OF LIFE
EXERCISE
QUESTION FOR WRITTEN WORK
Answer the following questions in brief:
(1)What is water management?
Ans.
Water management is an activity of planning, developing, distributing and
managing the optimum use of water resources. It is a subset of water cycle
management.
(2)Explain the relationship between water and living
organisms.
Ans.
i) The earth is described as 'Bahuratna Vasundhara'. Water is one
of the most important natural resources among the gems on earth.
ii) All living things on earth are made of water.
iii) The source of life for plants and animals is water.
iv) No living thing is able to live without water.
(3) How is the intensity of water scarcity divided according to
Falcon criteria?
Ans.
i) According to the Falcon criteria, the region is considered to be in
good water condition only if more than 1700 cubic metres of water is
available per capital year.
ii) If the annual per capita availability of water is less than 1000 cubic
metres, it is considered as a condition of scarcity of water. Are white
scarcity of water affects the standard of living of people.
(4) Give an example of equal availability of water for use
despite the same amount of rainfall.
Ans.
One of the major examples of unequal distribution is the Kaveri
river that initially ran across the state of Tamilnadu and Karnataka
, yet is today is distributed among three states and one union
territory.
(5) Why is groundwater depleted?
Ans.
In our country, farmers traditionally draw water from wells to
irrigate farmland. At many times what is used excessively or is
wasted. This decrease groundwater level. Groundwater reserves in
India are rapidly declining due to depletion of such abundant water
for irrigation.
(6) What is the relationship between health and
urbanization?
Ans.
i) Increasing urbanization in the basin is followed by a
number of series impacts on the health of the river basin
system.
ii) Alternation in the hydrology and geomorphology of streams
as well as the deterioration of it's water quality are the most
determined effects identified due to urbanization
