Answer the following question in brief:
(1)What is pollution of water? What is water pollution found in
your area?
Ans.
i) The natural quality of water changes directly and indirectly due to
human action or other causes and water becomes unstable for any
purpose this is called water pollution.
ii) In our area most of the water pollution occurs in the well near our
house. It gets polluted by plastic paper, household, material etc.
(2)Write down the factors that cause water pollution.
Ans.
i) Household pollutants:- Bath water, animal excrement, etc.
ii) Industrial pollutants:- sludge, chemicals, etc.
iii) Agriculture pollutants:- chemical fertilizers, pesticides,
etc.
(3)Which diseases are spread by pathogenic microorganisms in water?
Ans.
i) Entamoeba histolytica: Dysentery
ii) Salmonella typhi: typhoid
iii) Vibrio chlorae: chlorae
iv) Hepatitis (A,B,C,D,E): jaundice
v) Plasmodium species through anopheles: Malaria
(4)Explain with examples how oil spill in the sea harms the environment.
Ans.
i) Marine life and bird coated in oil are prone to hypothermia and death.
ii) Oil forms a thin layer on the oceans officers and prevents sufficient
sunlight from entering the ocean surface.
iii) This reduces the dissolved oxygen levels in water, making it difficult for
marine life to breathe.
(5)What are the reasons for the declining number of
lakes in cities?
Ans.
While climate changes playing a role, the building of dams,
over extraction and miss-management of water and over
fishing are all playing a part in the disappearing of lakes in
cities.
(6)Explain the functions of the Maharashtra pollution control
board.
Ans.
i) Planning programme for pollution prevention and control.
ii) Inspection of sewage.
iii) Corporation and promotion of eco friendly programmes.
iv) Education and guide new entrepreneurs .
