Water management is a policy of allocating water on the principle of
equal justice for all taking into account all the problems in three:
i) Drinking water from a certain population.
ii) Water for agriculture and
iii) Water for industries .
(2) Explain the need for water management.
Ans.
i) In the modern times human's need for water has grown exponentially.
ii) On the country the natural resources of water have greatly depleted as
they are being overused due to the growing population.
iii) Today the situation of water availability all over the world is
becoming alarming.
(3) What are the problems encountered in water management ?
Ans.
i) Water conservation
ii) Groundwater recharge
iii) Water pollution
iv) Excess use of water in agriculture
v) Less public participation
vi) No recycling of sewage
(4) How can water pollution be curbed ?
Ans.
i) Disposal of substances like waste discharge from factories ,
hazardous chemicals , hazardous liquids, sewage , etc. should
be done in such a way that it doesn't harm the environment .
ii) Do not contaminate water sources like well , pond , river ,
etc.
(5) For what purposes can sewage be used?
Ans.
i) Sewage water can be used for drinking if it is
purified up to 100 %.
ii) It can be reused for gardening , cleaning vehicles ,
cleaning toilets , cooling equipments and irrigation.
(6) What are the important activities for water management ?

iii) economical use of water in agriculture

(8) What are the different ways to save water in residential
societies?
Ans.
i) Recycling left over water instead of throwing away , bathing with
a bucket of water .
ii) Avoiding washing clothes under the running tap at home.
iii) Watering the plants in the pot as required before sunrise.
iv) Using water sparingly in kitchen , washrooms , outside garden , etc.
(9) How can we save the water in rural and urban areas?
Ans.
i) Better methods of irrigation should be used.
ii) People's participation is required to save water.
iii) Water can be saved through maximum participation of people.
iv) Domestic waste water should be recycled.
v) Public awareness of proper use of water .
(10) Why is it necessary to have water audit ?
Ans.
i) For the careful use of water , tap water meters must be installed and
water bills must be charged according to metres.
ii) Water audit should be made mandatory for all irrigation projects and
water supply agencies should do it, so that water can be used carefully.
iii) Also , people using more water should be taxed and at a higher rate
and the waste water treatment system should be set up from the
available funds.
